On
behalf of linnies and linnie lovers everywhere, we’d like to clarify that linnies are not just budgies wrapped up in
a more compact package. Linnies are a completely different bird, and one of aviculture’s most grossly underestimated
birds. Unfortunately, the “parakeet” part of their name and natural green colouration means that many people are neglectng
to consider this absolutely fabulous avian companion!
The
lineolated parakeet, or Bolborhynchus lineola is a tree-dwelling bird found natively in South America
in a huge range covering Mexico, Venezuela and Peru. Fairly new in aviculture, especially
in North America, keepers of this tiny bundle of fun affectionately call
them “linnies”.
Ideal
for new bird keepers, or those who find themselves limited by space, linnies make active and quiet companions. Curious, playful,
and sweet, linnies are known to have an easy going nature and quiet calm when compared to other small companion birds.
While
small in stature, linnies have many qualities that make them parrot-like. They often use their feet to manipulate objects
and love to play with a wide variety of toys. While quiet-voiced, they can learn to talk and their speech can be quite clear.
They very much enjoy to be with their owners, something that can easily be accommodated due to their small size.
Having
lived in their past lives high in the tropical treetops, linnies have a special penchant for water and love being bathed and
misted on a regular basis. They also appreciate a wide variety of greens and fresh food, which should always be included in
their diet.
