Senegals
come from the genus Poicephalus, which is derived from the Greek words for grey and head. This entire family of parrots
is easily identified by their striking monochromatic heads, found in various shades of grey. Senegals themselves have a pewter
coloured head, green colouration on their wings and body and a belly “vest” that ranges from bright orange to
yellow-orange, depending on the subspecies.
These inquisitive birds
hail from western coast of continental Africa, and possess many of the wonderful qualities that make
them an ideal bird both for those who are relatively new to birds, or who are already experienced caregivers. They are strong
and sturdy in stature, and known to be hardy health wise.
Known for their generally
quiet demeanor, these birds are highly social and inquisitive. Their personalities tend to be calm and laid back, and they
are less likely to bite or behave aggressively during hormonal periods, unlike many medium sized parrots. While they very
much enjoy being part of household activities, they are confident and playful enough to amuse themselves if needed.
Like their cousin, the
African Grey, Senegals can learn to be very clear and competent
talkers, but tend to be of softer voice than many other species. Although highly social, they are very curious and playful,
and a wide variety of toys in their cage will help keep them occupied during the hours you’re away. They also seem to
have an affinity for training, and can pick up a wide range of “tricks” through consistent training.
Senegals should be
fed a diet primarily consisting of a high-quality pellet, with offerings of fresh fruits, vegetables and grains daily. A small
amount of seed can be offered, but this should be limited.
